Review: Kiss Me, Judas

Kiss Me, Judas
Kiss Me, Judas by Will Christopher Baer
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I was tempted do a one word review for this book. ThAT word would have been “bitchin’.”

Let it be known that I am not an avid reader of neo-noir fiction, but I will say that Baer might have just changed all that for me with this book. It takes an urban myth–-the old woke up in a bathtub of ice with an organ missing–as a premise and improves upon it. Damn, what a fun ride this was. Baer really brings the protagonist, Phineas Poe alive even as he is waiting to die throughout the book. It’s amazing. With all the sensibilities of classic noir novels present, KISS ME, JUDAS is still presented to us in a unique and engaging way. For me, this was a page-turner. Gritty throughout, humorous in all the right spots, and unceasingly driven, this is a great book.

If hard-boiled contemporary noir is your thing, seems to me it would be a tragic mistake not to pick this one up.
