7Hills Editing & Writing Services

7HILLS-FB-COVER-sm
Welcome! If you’ve landed here, then you are very likely a fiction writer. Maybe you’re just starting out and you’re looking to make this writing thing a full or part-time career. Either way, it’s your passion and you have a story to tell but you need some input from someone connected to the writing and publishing industry. Someone who isn’t going to charge you an arm and a leg. You just need to know if this plot idea is working or what kind of genre this story fits into and where you might submit it.

I can help you with that. Writing is an art, not a science, and like any art, there is a great deal of subjectivity to it. However, there are some things that people do–especially when just starting on the journey–that make the difference between good writing and bad writing. Seeing those things in your own work early on can save you time and effort and heartache in the future. After all, like Tom Waits said…

“The world is a hellish place, and bad writing is destroying the quality of our suffering.”

Fiction Editing Services

At 7Hills, the standard editing service I offer is pretty basic, which helps keep the service affordable and the process simple, so that you can get back to writing and marketing your work.

Broad View Edits

I will read your story and offer what I call “broad view” or “big picture” edits on it. These edits can pertain to: story structure, characterization, story mechanics, point of view, story approach, word usage, consistency, repetition, and word economy (using the fewest words to greatest effect.) If desired, where I can, I will also provide suggestions on possible markets for the story as well as submission dos and don’ts.

For this service, I charge:

$15.00 for stories up to 1,500 words

$30.00 for stories over 1,500 but under 7,000 words

For longer stories, the rate would be an additional $5.00 per thousand words, rounding down. I cap a short story at 10,000 words. If your story is longer than that, contact me directly and we will negotiate an appropriate rate.

Novels and Novellas

I’m not necessarily  looking to provide Broad View edits for novellas or novels but you are free to contact me about this. If my schedule allows it and the work interests me, we may be able to work something out.

Turnaround

I will make every effort to have your story edited and returned to you within a week or less. If the work is longer or circumstances prevent me from meeting this goal, I will let you know up front.

Formatting

Stories for editing should be typed in Word or RTF format and be double-spaced in Times New Roman font, 12 point size. Text meant to appear in italics should be italicized, not underlined.

Payment

Payment is to be rendered once I have completed the edit. Once I have confirmation of payment, I will send your edited story to you. Paypal is the quickest way to accomplish this.

Writing Services

I am also currently available to write copy for your business or corporation. From letters to ad copy to white papers, if you need someone to eloquently and concisely communicate your ideas through the written, I can help you out. Contact me directly to discuss the project and appropriate rates.

I am not interested in taking on any ghostwriting projects at this time.

My Qualifications

DAWard-Author-Photo-MainI am a writer with a love for editing…as long as it’s not my own work. Which is what makes me perfect to edit yours. I co-edited the very successful Shadows Over Main Street anthology of horror fiction, and am currently co-editing a second volume in the Shadows Over Main Street series as well as the anthology, Gutted: Beautiful Horror Stories, for Crystal Lake Publishing. I’ve written dozens of short stories, collected some of them into a book (A Feast of Buzzards) and authored Blood Savages: A Blackguards Novel for Necro Publications. I am also a Bram Stoker Award Verifier for the Horror Writers Association.
